When it comes to personality assessments, everyone knows the popular kid on the block - that’s what makes them the popular kid on the block. But sometimes, the best assessment is the less popular one. Or maybe its the assessment you’ve never heard of. Here are four of our favorites.
Talogy Caliper
When you think of personality assessment tests, you probably think of something like the Talogy Caliper. It’s one of the best and oldest on the market. Caliper is a scientifically validated measure of 21 personality traits, as well as dozens of behaviors, competencies, and job models.
Personality traits, like the ones used in the Caliper, are the building blocks of our personality. It’s the unique way that these building blocks interact that make us who we are. Examples include Assertiveness, Thoroughness, and Risk Taking. When we combine personality traits together, we get Behaviors - the actions that we can actually observe in people. Behaviors combine to make Competencies, which are the “real world’ results that we can expect from people’s performance. All of these roll up into job models like Senior Leader, Nurse, and Franchisee, which makes hiring for a common role even more straightforward. With Talogy Caliper, we can build entire talent management programs that touch every part of the employee lifecycle.
Chally Assessment
Some companies use such a unique approach to the science of personality assessment that you can’t help but take notice. The Chally Assessment is such an assessment. It was developed using actuarial science, which giant insurance and financial firms use to assess risk. This means that the Chally Assessment’s model can actually predict performance in over 200 workplace-relevant behaviors.
Most personality tests are descriptive, which means that the test collects information based on how the test-taker describes oneself. Basically, descriptive personality tests rely on how we describe ourselves to the test itself. Chally’s assessment technology, on the other hand, uses their actuarial approach to predict not how we believe we’ll perform in a certain role, but rather how we actually will perform in a certain role based on studies of real people performing in the role.
Predictive assessment technology has many obvious enterprise applications, but it is also a powerful professional individual development tool. Imagine coaching people to develop unrealized potential and talent by focusing on the innate capacity predicted by the Chally Assessment. We’ve been able to turbocharge succession and development client engagements by steering into untapped, unrealized potential in existing talent pools.
FIRO-B (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior)
The FIRO-B instrument measures how much Control, Inclusion, and Affection that individuals need from each other. This is important when we need to know how a team member fits in a team or why a team is struggling. For example, how might a leader who values camaraderie and morale but has almost no tolerance for rules and procedures be received in a new role? What about in company where rules and procedures are necessary to success? It could be trouble. Or it could be hilarious. But probably it will be trouble. Either way, the FIRO-B can help you get your arms around it.
TKI (Thomas Kilmann Instrument)
The TKI is a fast and simple assessment that ranks our preferences for how we behave in conflict with each other. Since we all experience conflict, it is important to understand how we experience and handle it. For some of us, conflict is energizing and productive. For others, it’s uncomfortable and paralyzing. This powerful assessment unpacks the dynamics of conflict to improve teamwork, negotiation skills, and self-awareness. The TKI helps surface our conflict styles so that we can understand each other better and get to work.
